For the Love of Boxers

To Sergeant, My Inspiration

How I Fell In Love With the Boxer

In June of 2001 we received an offer to a champion bred beautiful stud Boxer. He was 5 years old and when I met him he was living chained outside and sleeping in an old dog house. The people who owned him were moving 10 hours away and didn’t want to have to deal with him.
The first thing my Mom said when she saw him was, “NO!”  She thought he looked like a very thin bulldog. My parents had never liked bulldogs and were very uncomfortable having one in our home, especially with all the grandchildren around. We took him home for a two day trial, my parents said if he had any issues we would consider a different home.
I immediately started searching for boxer information on the internet. I called several people and spent hours on the phone with reputable boxer breeders. I was hoping to get so much information that I could prove my parent wrong and keep him. What I found and learned didn’t even come close to what Sergeant taught us himself.
From the first day he was at our house he followed my dad around the yard as he did his work and laid by my feet while I did my homework. My mom still wasn’t sold on the whole idea and kept her distance for a while. But from the face full of kisses to those puppy dog eyes there were no exceptions. Sergeant became one of the Family and made a very big impression on all the children that came to our home.
We had rescued several dogs from bad situations in our life but he was different. I didn’t realize why till later but it was because he was a boxer. If you ever own a boxer you understand how having one changes your life. They somehow know what you are thinking just by your body language. When I was sad he was right there to comfort me. When I was happy he was all ready to play. And when I was scared he became a very different dog. He was very protective of our family and any children that came here. I remember that one second he would be alert and keeping an eye on everything, and then a child was pulling his ears and climbing on top of him.
He was the first dog I had ever completely trusted. He made way for me to open up and learn to trust. Sergeant coming into our lives was the best thing that ever happened to us. He changed the way we live, think, and especially LOVE. We had Sergeant for over 5 years when he passed away. We know there will never be another boxer quite like him.
